HJC's guide to RentHelpMN appeals - Housing Justice Center

If you’ve found your way to this web page, it’s likely because you’ve recently been denied the emergency rental assistance you applied for through RentHelpMN. While that is frustrating news, you still have an option to appeal your denial of benefits, and Housing Justice Center is here to help. We have broken down the process step-by-step below. If you need further assistance, please contact HJC at 1-800-403-0476 or email us at clients@hjcmn.org.

STEP 1

Start by reviewing the instructions for submitting an appeal, as well as the appeal request form, at renthelpmn.org/resourcesNote that your appeal must be mailed or faxed to the RentHelpMN Program Team at:

RentHelpMN Document Services Center
1055 American Boulevard, Suite A
Bloomington, MN 55420
Fax: 952-285-2318

RentHelpMN will not accept appeals via email.

STEP 2

You should fill out the appeal request form and check the box that best captures your reasoning for your appeal. On page two of the form, you should check the box that indicates “I have included additional information/documentation,” and list the other items you are including with your appeal.

STEP 3

In addition to the appeal form, we recommend writing a letter that explains your situation. Find HJC’s template for that letter here.

STEP 4

In addition to the appeal request form, the letter, and any additional documentation you are including, you must include a cover sheet with your appeal. Cover sheets for mail and fax can be found at renthelpmn.org/resources.

Important Tips

  • You will not get back any documents that you mail or fax. Therefore, we recommend that you make copies of everything you are sending. If you cannot make copies, at the very least you should take photos of what you are sending. This also serves as evidence that you have submitted an appeal.
  • If you are mailing your appeal, take it to the post office and get a receipt for the mailing. If you are faxing your appeal, get a fax receipt. This is so you have proof that you submitted an appeal.
  • If you need further assistance with your appeal, please contact HJC at 1-800-403-0476 or email us at clients@hjcmn.org.
